http://www.sundancechannel.com/iconoclasts Wynton Marsalis answers the question: What is an Iconoclast?

In the "Iconoclasts: Wynton Marsalis + John Besh" episode of "Iconoclasts," musician and Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center Wynton Marsalis and chef John Besh are New Orleans natives who share a passion for their hometown. Both are committed to preserving and enriching the city's distinct culture and flavor, especially since the devastation in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Besh visits Marsalis in New York at Jazz at Lincoln Center and attends the Montreal Jazz Fest for Marsalis' performance of Congo Square. Then the two meet in New Orleans and visit Congo Square, the historic New Orleans gathering place that served as an inspiration for Wynton's music. They also survey the post-Katrina rebuilding effort and dine at Besh's restaurant La Provence. Directed by Bruce Sinofsky.

ICONOCLASTS airs Thursdays at 10pm on Sundance Channel.

  • Why criticize? This is the American character. This belief makes us who we are. It's about freedom to create after you pay your dues. We all believe in this or we reject who we are as a people. If we can't accept who we are, then why are we here?

  • What is an iconoclast? Not Wynton Marsalis. But he people he hates were.

  • @dragonbrings that's what I would have thought too.

  • @scotttinkler jazz is only limited by the ability and imagination of the musician

  • @eric33190 BEAUTIFULLY SAID! PREACH ON!

    JAZZ IS EVERYTHING!

  • D: i dont get sundance channel

  • Iconoclast = Miles Davis

  • Comparing people of today to greats of the past can't even be thought about. Does anybody realize that there isn't a "super star" like there was in those times and there hasn't been in a long time. Music is too easily accessed now, new music is literally impossible to not find. is it bad? no! we have suddenly encountered an era where there is so much music we don't know what to do with it. I think the least of what we should do however is sit and argue and criticize. How about just listen.

  • In my opinion, the fact that any of you are telling somebody else what jazz "is" is just wrong in itself. Jazz "is". We as individuals make it literally whatever we want to. It's everything into one, improv, and knowing exactly what's about to happen all at the same time. There's no "name" or "definition". All of this in my opinion, as I previously stated. The fact that youtubers get on these videos and just want to label and criticize is crazy. Enjoy the ability to take in information so easily

  • I am proudly a jazz drummer. And jazz isn't harder, more intelligent or more difficult than rock, just different. Sadly that's that kind of thing that makes that jazz musician cliche, our pretentiousness when it comes to the purity of jazz. I personally believe we need to break out of our barriers of playing old standards and blues tunes and get with the time, while still not forgetting music in the past. Don't get me wrong, nothing gets me feeling good like a blues. Check out the Bad Plus
