Emily McDivitt Fights Off Rapist - Van Nuys CA

March 18, 2009. Emily McDivitt leaves her home in Van Nuys, CA for an early morning run. According to the Daily News:
VAN NUYS - In a terrifying moment that would have paralyzed most other people, Emily McDivitt's mind raced with life-saving techniques learned in self-defense classes and at home with her husband, a retired Marine.

Pinned to the ground by an attacker during a recent early-morning jog, the 5-foot-2, 101-pound woman decided to act - punching the man in the face and squeezing his groin with all her might.

The assailant stood up, kicked her in the side and spat a filthy name at her. Then he walked away.

"I want people to know that if you can find a way to defend yourself, do it," said McDivitt, 33. "Try to get your head together and just do it."

Stories of the pre-dawn attack on March 18 appeared in the Daily News and other local media. As a rule, police don't release the names of assault or rape victims. But after reading stories of her attack, McDivitt called the Daily News to share her story in hopes it could inspire other victims to fight back.

"He walked away. He walked away at a good pace," she said of her attacker. "I must have done something to him. He didn't get what he wanted."
