National Day of Reconciliation

June 11, 2009 marked the first anniversary of Canada's apology for its treatment
of children, parents and families as a result of the Indian Residential School
system.
The National Day of Reconciliation began with a sunrise ceremony at 5:30 a.m. on
Victoria Island. Members of the public were welcome to participate or observe. At 11:00
a.m., First Nations leaders and citizens, church leaders, politicians and concerned
Canadians marched from Victoria Island to Parliament Hill. At Parliament Hill, National Chief Phil Fontaine addressed the crowd, as did other leaders and special invited guests. Children also
invited everyone to participate in a Round Dance, a traditional display of friendship
and goodwill.
