Malicious software (malware) and hackers can steal your privacy, your identity and even control of your computer from you. Viruses can wipe out your data. Learn the threats and how you can protect yourself. Also learn how to reduce spam emails.

Please don't ask me how to fix your computer; I don't even do that for a living — I'm a programmer. Take it to a competent repair person if you're infected and installed security software doesn't fix it.

IMO, the best security software:

Free anti-spyware program:

  • i dont use trend micro.... well because it picks up to many flase positivists and fail to detect any payloads from what i created "The Archive From Hell" and it added 30 seconds to my laptops boot time

  • @TheDougtechcrew - Starting with its latest release this year, TrendMicro uses cloud computing to handle the bulk of the antivirus processing on their server instead of on your machine. For me it works quietly in the background and I haven't had a successful malware attack in the last four years I've been using it.

Whatever you are using, I hope your computer is protected by something effective because otherwise you're also putting at risk the computer of anyone you send emails or files to.

  • but you're a woman!

  • @katakis1 - So? So was my mother, and she was among the first wave of female computer programmers in the insurance, banking and other corporate IT sectors in the early 1970s. Being *smart* helps in programming, so being a woman is actually a major advantage! :)

  • avast is the only anti virus you need, it has everything built into to it and their is a free version of this software to download. highly recommended by me.. :)

  • Actually avast is no longer free. The antivirus part is still there but you have to pay for anti-spyware and other full protection. Also once you load on the free part it starts popping up messages saying that you have spyware — which are usually harmless tracking cookies — and need to upgrade to the full *paid* version.

If you have to pay for full protection anyway, I'd strongly suggest TrendMicro. (And, no, I'm not a paid spokesperson; a safer Internet is in everybody's interest.)
