One of my favorite members of the Ward Singers, Mrs. Mildred Means. She was born and raised in Atlanta, GA and eventually moved to Detroit, MI, where she was a member of the Loftonaires (out of the Church of Our Prayer).

Years later she became a member of C.L Franklin's church choir, and that's where Clara Ward "discovered" Mildred Means. Mildred came to the group in 1959 and remained until the late 1960's.

Mildred was known for ability to hit high notes and hold them for years and a day! LOL! She always says to me, "Yeah, I would hold from here to your house." LOL!

  • Go Head Mama, Them Sopranos Aint Nothing Nice

  • @Joshua12254: Oh yes!!!

  • Was this the same concert at the Apollo with the late Dorothy Holmes?

  • @jddrew1000: Yes

  • The Lady just gets right down to the nitty gritty of a note, if you will! I also love her dark beauty...there is something familiar, yet refined and detached there. You are one lucky guy to have had the chance to meet all of these living keys to gospel music history, and really American music history. Or perhaps I should say simply Blessed :)

  • LOL! Thank you very much! Mildred is my heart! I talk to her frequently and she's just amazed to know that there are so many young people who have taken an interest in the traditional Gospel. Believe me when I say that I'm going to read to her your comment, as well as some of the others on this page.
