Rodney Ryan "Rod" Shealy Sr. of Irmo died Wednesday at MUSC.
Born in Columbia on December 22, 1953, Shealy was the son of Elsie Porth Shealy and the late Sen. Ryan C. Shealy of Lexington. He attended Lexington High School and USC, and was a political consultant, newspaper owner/publisher, writer, and businessman.
Shealy ran numerous political campaigns in South Carolina and elsewhere throughout the last four decades, often pulling off wins considered impossible by pundits. He founded a consulting company and a printing business, and he owned five weekly newspapers.
Shealy was easily identified by his trademark Hawaiian shirts as well as by his guitar playing and sense of humor.
He is survived by his mother; two sons, Rodney Ryan "RJ" Shealy Jr. of Irmo , and S. Ross Shealy (Carla); his two grandchildren, Nina Shealy and Redding Shealy, Cayce; three sisters, Sherry Martschink (Karl J. Duppstadt), Summerville; Christy Mills (Glen), Prosperity; and Lorri Unumb (Dan), Lexington; one brother, S. Shawn Shealy (Catherine), Columbia; one step-daughter, Amy Kuenzel (Will), Charleston; Rebecca Beheler Shealy, former wife, West Columbia; Patricia Love Shealy of Irmo; five nieces and seven nephews.
Funeral services were held at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Lexington.
