Entry Title: "Sprechen Sie Englisch????"

Entry:

"Gidday gidday!

We are sitting in a very strange internet bar in a rather strange Czech town by the name of Litomìøice - it's about 30 mins drive from Prague we think, we decided to stop off here on the way cos the Lonely Planet said it was good...but it's a little bit spooky. There is a huge town square but there's nobody in it, despite it being 5pm on a Saturday night, and the few people we´ve seen look a little strange but it's a little too soon to judge I think, considering we've been in the country all of 1 and 1/2 hours!!

Anyway, in the past week we have battled pretty much constant rain as we traversed northern Germany which has been a little disheartening...in the Netherlands it was on and off but Germany has really turned on the **** weather. But we are still in high spirits, helped by the addition of Bruce to our team, who has slotted into our routines verz well, making himself useful by doing dishes, putting up and dismantling tents, and best of all, becoming a shining star in the realm of navigation...which is great news as far as I'm concerned, as the pressure of chief navigator is a rather tough job!

First stop in Germany was Hamburg, which is a quite newish looking city as it was pretty much completely flattened during WW2. It was nice and we climbed up a tower to see the city and looked at some remains of bombed churches, but the whole town had a rather stinky smell - I'm serious! - not sure why, but it reminded me of Angkor Wat, so we headed off pretty quick smart north to Lubeck, a really cute little medieval town surrounded by a big moat and had a fun time exploring the little streets and sights there.

Next we headed across to Berlin, where we spent 2 days and would´ve stayed longer if the weather hadn't been so nasty - it's a great city with heaps to do and such a turbulent history. Like Amsterdam, lots of cheap eats in the form of doner kebabs and little italian restaurants - plus yummy bakeries!, but unlike Amsterdam, cheap cheap parking in the central city - 2 euro for 4 hours! We managed to see most of the sights while dodging the downpours, though we couldn't locate Hitler's bunker, and learnt a lot about the Wall and WW2 stuff that we didn't know. So both educational and enjoyable, what more could you ask of a holiday!

Today we stopped off in Messein, a little town near Dresden before crossing into the Czech Republic. We were greeted by a very friendly customs guy at the border and we were a bit scared handing over 3 passports but he just looked in the back and saw Cam sitting there - Bruce started driving today - and chuckled and waved us through, phew!

Not sure how long we are going to stay here or where we are off to next, but we will be heading back to Bratwurst country - we want to go to Munich and a few places nearby so Germany hasn't seen the last of us yet! We've been struggling a bit with our lack of German though - hardly anything, even in touristy places, is in English. And they don't speak it as much or as well as the Dutch. When we ran out of petrol on the highway between Hamburg and Berlin the boys had an interesting time trying to communicate with locals as they had to hitch to the nearest petrol station! That was a bit of adventure. Some people in shops etc have seemed a bit grumpy, but people at the camping ground and locals we met when we were gathering blackberries have seemed really nice...not that we can understand what they are saying, but a smile and nod go a long way!

This Czech keyboard is driving me crazy so have to stop now....lots of love to everybody, keep emailing!"
