And i'll tell you why your opinion is wrong. First off, they dont THINK they know it, "they" as in Geologist or Paleontologist pretty much have carbon dating down to be accurate and will continue to become more accurate as technology increases, and about the line that you quoted, he was obviously using "hell" as a metaphor, because the concept of hell has been pasted on from religion to religion as place that you go when you're bad :(
