Part of my "Reflections" series. The Golden Gate Quartet formed in the mid 30s and is perhaps the best known of the jubilee style gospel quartets, having their heyday mostly during the 40s. They disbanded in the late 40s but regrouped in 1955, performing mostly in Europe. Their style can be heard in almost all gospel groups that followed and their influence on Elvis Presley (and their arrangement) can be heard in his rendition of Swing Down Sweet Chariot.
This group performed in my classroom in Switzerland in 1964, when I was a teenager. It was very nice to listen to, I will never forget it.
