Joe Ebono on Refugees

Under Malcolm Fraser, Bob Hawke and Paul Keating refugees were processed humanely and sensibly with the support of both major parties and no publicity. When John Howard decided to take political advantage of the flames of fear fanned by Pauline Hanson he started a war on refugees that shatters Australia's traditions of hospitality and genorosity and presents us as mean spirited and short sighted.

We need to recognise that these people have given up everything and endangered their lives to flee situations of absolute terror. We should embrace them as valuable members of our future community willing to help us build a robust, vibrant and stable future.
