I think he got the beard to not be compared to Jussi Bjorling!
Without the beard the look almost identical! In same way this is pure logic. Because if sound is produced by your body and facial mask - Then of course similar bodies and faces can produce similar sounds.
Look at early Pv singing Ingemisco - Then look at Bjorling at the same age.
