Here is an Animated rendition of Edgar Allan Poe's Eldorado. To Celebrated Poe's 200th Birthday.

The poem describes the journey of a "gallant knight" in search of the legendary El Dorado. The knight spends much of his life on this quest. In his old age, he finally meets a "pilgrim shadow" who points the way through "the Valley of Shadow." It was first published in the April 21, 1849, issue of the Boston-based The Flag of Our Union.

TEXT

Gaily bedight,
A gallant knight,
In sunshine and in shadow,
Had journeyed long,
Singing a song,
In search of Eldorado.

But he grew old,
This knight so bold,
And o'er his heart a shadow,
Fell as he found,
No spot of ground,
That looked like Eldorado.

And, as his strength,
Failed him at length,
He met a pilgrim shadow;
"Shadow," said he,
"Where can it be,
This land of Eldorado?"

"Over the mountains
Of the moon,
Down the Valley of the Shadow,
Ride, boldly ride,"
The shade replied,
"If you seek for Eldorado!"

  • Amazing video! Is there a better copy of this? I would love to use it for my class to show an interpretation of the poem.

  • ...cool

  • what a marvelous interpretation!

I love the delivery- I think it works wonderfully this way because of the way in which the animation is done.

  • feel the same way

  • The voice fit nicely, but you got the words mixed up, and the pauses were much too long, it is clearly shown that the poem is meant to flow, not be incredibly choppy. Try again. It just wasn't good enough for how critical I am.

  • well done...

  • I think in a way this is actually quite amazing but I also think that this perhaps misreads the sentiment of the original poem. I always read the poem as a kind of hopelessness and world weariness rather than any direct kind of confrontation with any particular force. The shadow being the release from lifelong torment rather than a malevolent adversary. That said, I do think this is really beautiful.

  • cool voices
