Nelson Mandela's Birthday Wish

Nelson Mandela celebrated his 90th birthday Wednesday with children at a French school in Johannesburg. He shared an inspirational wish for the future of the children. Here's more.

STORY:
Nelson Mandela will turn 90 on the 18th of July and he's celebrating the event in style.

South Africa's iconic former president tucked into his share of a giant birthday cake alongside children at the French school in Johannesburg.

France has handed over more than 300, 000 dollars to the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund to help build a children's hospital in the city.

The veteran statesman revealed he had a particular wish of his own.

[Nelson Mandela, Former South African President]:
"To the youth of today, I also have a wish to make. Be the scri ptwriters of your destiny and feature yourself as the star that shows the way to a brighter future."

On Monday South Africa unveiled a special edition coin as part of the celebrations to mark 90th birthday of Mandela, often affectionately referred to by his former clan name, Madiba.

[Trevor Manuel, South Africa's Minister of Finance]:
"We want them in circulation because of what it must feel like to touch a bit of Madiba, to share that love and experience and leadership as the coin goes around."

At the end of June Mandela attended a star-studded birthday party in London and the U.S. has just given him another birthday present.

Washington is finally removing Mandela and other senior figures of the African National Congress from its terrorist watch list.
