Gmail is also a good option or other remote mail services I just happen to like gmail so you can manage your email remotely which makes getting infected by something much less likely.

One other thing I think that is worth mentioning is phishing which is a really big problem catching many who aren't net savy.

Phishing is when you get an email that says something like "your ebay account needs updating please log in and update your information" or "someone made a purchase on your citibank cc that looked unusual.."

The link in your email will say "ebay" or "CitiBank" and clicking it will take you to a page that looks just like the page you would normally login using. BUT it isn't ebay or citibank it's someone trying to steal your login info.
