The oldest surviving watchtower house was built more than 400 years ago to protect the villagers from thieves and floods. The rest were mostly built from the 1900's to the 30's using money sent home from Chinese who worked in North America. Some of them never made it home though. Those photos were taken in Feb 2006.

    i know the dialect, cuz i learned it as a child. it has a few different tones and some words just sound a bit different

    its pretty close, my grandmother knew the dialect and i was to learn it as a child. now i can speak fluently.. but i needa learn proper chinese

    yes brings back lots of memories. in my childhood i used to live just a few miles from one of the watchtowers. both dialects are not very much different, as there's a certain pattern in how different pronunciations differ from the other dialect.
