When he first emerged as an Illinois State Senator into the national spotlight to run for the post of "junior" Senator in Washington D.C., he was an unknown.A mystery man of Kansan and Kenyan heritages who was raised in Hawaii largely by his White grandparents, Barack Barack Hussein Obama, has seemed "a walking enigma" his entire life. But on his first attempt he won the American Presidency while serving his first Senate term to become the first African-American to earn the office. So he had to know something. Indeed a lot of "Sumthin, Sumthin", as is said out in certain streets.

A lot of famous Black folks cried on TV (among many, many others, of course) when Obama won on Nov. 4, 2008. And what they said most united them in their tears of joy had been their disbelief that he or any other Black American would ever win in their lifetimes. But that is to a great extent because they did not know how to do it, not because it has never been possible before, necessarily.
