@jassoe The inlay is actually brass I believe, It was a feature of Bowie Knives that was designed to catch another knife in the event of a knife fight, (You might check 'Bowie Knives' on Wikepedia for more information) although these days those spine inlays are a visual feature for collectable Bowie Knives like 'The Alamo Bowie' and 'The Case Bowie Knives' and many others more than anything else.
