Local Students Discuss Ethics of Altering Genes

High school students from around the Valley discussed an unusual topic Thursday at Eastern Mennonite High School. They were talking about whether or not society or the government should step in when it comes to altering the genes of a child before it's born.

It's called transhumanism, or altering the human body through biotechnology.

Award-winning journalist and author Ronald Bailey analyzed the ethics of the question. Eight high schools participated in the 16th annual discussion, and Professor Myron Blosser says students will be confronted with the issue because of new technology.

"Once you know where a gene is, then that opens up the possibility for manipulating that gene, cutting, pasting, changing," says Blosser. "So parents will eventually have the options of manipulating their DNA prior to having children."

Blosser says intelligence, eye and hair color, history for disease, height, sex, and athletic ability may be changed before birth. However, it may present issues, such as food shortage, over-population or even conflicts with religion.

AND, by the way, a new Canadian study shows that 80% of fetuses of pregnant woman have BT toxins in their blood and 98% of the woman do. All thanks to GMO's, how lovely. Oh, and maybe the tens of thousands of Indian farmers who have committed suicide after crop failures of GMO cotton would'nt agree with you either about larger yields.

I would hope you have changed your mind on everything you said, ie-GMO's are good, fluoride is too, etc. You must realize that there are numerous studies showing the detrimental effects of both. If fluoride is so good, why is there no credible or recent studies showing it is and there is mountains of evidence showing it is harmful? Maybe that is why 98% of Western Europe does not fluoridate. GMO's, oh God, every animal study done on GMO's

This is not indoctrination, and regardless of anyone's wishes, humanity as a whole isn't going to say, "enough technological development; we'll just cut it off right here, for all time." Telling someone from 1900 how 2000 turned out be would result in incredulity from all but the brightest. Similarly, there are only a few today who can accept that 2100 will far different from 2000. If you oppose the progression of technology, you WILL fail, so we transhumanists don't need to bother with you.

Well I'm all for Transhumanist ideals.

And I think it's wrong to ban genetic engineering/modifying. Not just wrong, an incredible injustice and an insult to human progress.

More often than not, the people I see who are against these things are either misinformed, plain ignorant, or are just trying to gain support (scare-tactics) for their conspiracy-theorist sensationalism.

Enhancing ourselves with technology is the next stage of progress, and is utterly inevitable!

Well ok, first off, fluoride in toothpaste kills bacteria which leads to fewer cavities, true, drinking it does nothing for your teeth. 98% of western europe has rejected it because of the health implications, funnily enough England fluoridates and Sweden(for example) does'nt, who has better teeth? Flouride is good for your teeth, GMO's allow us to sustain our large population food wise(plus some of them just look cool), spraying(I'm assuming you mean pesticides and shit) prevents the contamination of bugs on our crops providing a larger food output, Kids are way smarter these days than when they used to be, and lots of my relatives take SSRI's and seem better because of it...Shit, it seems ok from where I stand. Guess I've been brainwashed or something, eh?

What is wrong with these people, always messing with things. These indoctrinators, scientists, politicians, etc. who think alike and always want more control, have to be handed their hat. On top of that, real, true scientists etc. must be brought into positions of authority and then "all of this" could stop. They always say it is for the better.
