Ethel Waters sings Am I Blue from the 1929 motion picture "On With the Show". This was the first sound movie filmed in color-unfortunately, only black and white copies survive. Also co-starring with Waters in this film are Betty Compson, Arthur Lake and Joe E. Brown. In the second half of the clip, Ms.Waters is accompanied by The Four Emperors of Harmony.

Thanks for visiting-from the other side of the world. I still find all this internet and you tube "stuff" to be quite amazing.

The stage play "Ethel" brought me here. Hate I've been missing out on some great music for so long. Loved the show! Ms. Burrell was amazing as Ethel Waters! I laughed, cried and laughed some more.

After seeing the real Ethel, how well did Ms. Burrell perform her part?

What wonderful voice. What a beautiful woman. Forget the stereotypes of the time. Her performance and magic of the song o'erleap any and all peripheral hurdles. Wonderful, just wonderful!

Waters recorded her version, which became her signature song, on the Columbia label May 14, 1929 in NYC for the movie On With the Show. Annette recorded Am I Blue for the Puritone, Velvet Tone, Harmony and Diva labels on May 31, 1929, also in NYC.

Beautiful woman, wonderful voice. She had such sweetness in her face. Her talent transcends the racial stereotyping of the times. Thank you so much for preserving gems like this.
