Ethel Waters sings Am I Blue from the 1929 motion picture "On With the Show". This was the first sound movie filmed in color-unfortunately, only black and white copies survive. Also co-starring with Waters in this film are Betty Compson, Arthur Lake and Joe E. Brown. In the second half of the clip, Ms.Waters is accompanied by The Four Emperors of Harmony.

    The stage play "Ethel" brought me here. Hate I've been missing out on some great music for so long. Loved the show! Ms. Burrell was amazing as Ethel Waters! I laughed, cried and laughed some more.

    Waters recorded her version, which became her signature song, on the Columbia label May 14, 1929 in NYC for the movie On With the Show. Annette recorded Am I Blue for the Puritone, Velvet Tone, Harmony and Diva labels on May 31, 1929, also in NYC.
