America Rising is a song inspired by the events of 9/11/01. As we all sat by our televisions waiting for any sign of reassurance or hope mine came one morning shortly after 9/11 when the only news channel I had access to at the time changed their caption from "America under attack" to "America Rising". It gave me a sense of hope and I drove down to Weehawken and stared at the still smoking rubble across the river that once was those majestic towers that had become such a fixture in our NY Skyline. I wrote the words and some music to this song and brought it to Rino to work his magic. Together we completed it and knew that we had done something that was going to matter to people. I came up with a SATB arrangement and shared it with my very close friend Cathy Roy-Spies who was the director of the John Harms Performance Company, a group of talented young people from the ages of 13-18. I remember playing it for the kids and having some of them start to cry. They learned it that night and then I was the one in tears. This song was meant to be sung by children to heal hearts and that's what we did. The performance company and many of my students from St. John The Evangelist, The Academy of St. Therese and St. Joseph's of Bogota as well as my students from P.S. 19 and East Side Community Middle and High Schools in NYC in the C.A.P. program have sung this song at numerous memorial services for 9/11 victims and their families. It is sung at celebrations for Memorial and Veteran's Days on an annual basis. The performance company recorded it at John Harms through Bennett Studios in Englewood, NJ. Then Rino layed down the instrumental track and combined the two in his studio and ultimately produced what you hear here. There is no video so I did my best to compile royalty free photos in a montage so that I could post it on youtube. At a time when we all felt so helpless, this song made us feel like there was something that we could do. Music has healing power. I hope that you enjoy it and that you continue to share it and pass it on. For more information on sheet music or available recordings you can email me at spitt1111@hotmail.com.
