Metal and goth are quite different. Back in the 80s/early 90s, in LA at least, there was a wall of subcultural disdain/hatred between metalheads and goth/punk kids. The differences then make these stupid metal vs. pseudo-emo vs. "goth" wars of today look quaint. Goth/punk types were seen as upsetting the AOR-oriented apple cart that metal heads were part of, albeit the outer edge of it.
