"A new onsite helipad has opened at Southampton General Hospital..."
The construction of the life saving helipad on top of the hospital's multi-storey car park has been possible thanks to charitable donations made to the County Air Ambulance Helicopter Emergency Landing Pads Appeal -- the HELP Appeal.
Critically ill patients and seriously injured people served by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance have a much better chance of survival and recovery now that they can be flown directly to hospital.
Prior to the new helipad, the air ambulance landed at a playing field two miles away from the hospital.
Patients faced a transfer time of up to 30 minutes by road ambulance.
Every second counts when a patient is in need of emergency medical treatment after a suffering major trauma.
Now, patients arriving by air ambulance at Southampton General have just a short trolley journey down the ramp into the emergency department.
