@mmcgrego Taking your business elsewhere would not be a form of protest at all. It would be giving up and taking your business elsewhere. Occupation is a valid and historically successful method of bargaining with power. Look up the occupation of Columbia University in the 1960's, or more recently at the occupation of Republic Windows and Doors in Chicago. Actions like this should not just be tolerated, they are to be praised, without them, there can be no true democracy.
Obviously they can't run for senate (right now) and they probably don't have the information need to propose a real solution (not their fault) so I'd say the most effective form of protest would be to take your business elsewhere. UC may be a public institution, but it's still a business. If you don't like the price of the product, shop somewhere else. You make not be able to transfer 100% of completed classes but it's better than paying 32% more and it sends a clear message.
sorry, when you say Republicans against healthcare, I think townhallers (the Republicans in congress are against ANYTHING Obama supports) What more exactly do you think they should do? Run for state senate? I 'd love to see that, some of these kids just may have the time for it, too, after getting priced out of a higher education.
@theBiggLife I agree there is a serious problem with the education system in this country and particularly in CA. It's probably just as important, if not more so, than healthcare reform. My problem lies with these methods of protest. Not only are these demonstrations completely ineffective but they debase the value of my UCSC degree every time a potential employer sees a bunch of students camping in trees or participating in some other half-baked form of protest. It makes UCSC look bad.
@theBiggLife Not sure what your point is. Did you get results when you went to the capitol? or was it just as ineffective as "sit-ins" and "tree-sits" on campus? Who said anything about "townhallers"? I'm talking about the Republicans in congress that criticize but don't offer any real solutions to the problem. Pretty sure they went to college. I'm not FOR the tuition increases, but if you're going to criticize, you need to offer real solutions instead of throwing tantrums in admin buildings.
Look, I'm not a student, but I AM the parent of a student-not at a UC student; and I have friends and family that were and are professors in the UC system and my concern stems from this: from what I observed when my son and his friends were choosing colleges 2 years ago, is that unless you are pretty poor AND very VERY smart and hardworking OR unless you are quite wealthy, the possibility of a college education is getting slimmer and slimmer. Them's some pretty small demographics.
@mmcgrego Those are just a couple of dates when UC students protested education budget cuts at the capitol in Sacramento. I would post links, but youtube won't let me. And the fact that they're intelligent enough to get into college pretty much disproves your assertion that they're EXACTLY like the townhallers.
UCSC students don't always communicate well.
