Everyone who has one of these Herr Aquastars claims they won't ROW (Rise Off Water), so I thought I'd take some footage of mine. It has a brushless outrunner motor running off an 11.1v LiPo for power.
fly's nice, but it still sitts pretty low in the water and takes a lot of speed to get off. I think Herr designed the fuse too narrow and I think the motor mount has a little down thrust, which is a mistake. I built one with an AMA .061, and it would sometimes ROW, but just as often, it would skitter 200yds, never breaking free. Current brushless motors, Lipo, and micro servos can help a lot. I think mine was 22 oz. would have flown a lot better at 18-19oz given the small wing.
I just got one and and the motor is an ama 10. 1) will I have enough power to lift off from the water and 2) The plane doenst have alierons. Just elevator and rudder. Is that the norm for this model?
Correct, the power stays constant until the 12 minutes (give or take) is up. Then there is a rapid power drop. You have to land fairly soon, because LiPos can be permanately damaged by discharging them too low.
did you have a nitro engine before the conversion? i am thinking of buying one of these and really would like to know what you think of it, does it have 4ch? (ailerons)? could it fit full size servos with a rx and gas tank? will it row with a wasp .061 engine? that seems super tiny to me for a 2+ lb plane!? let me know thanks
