'Chaconne' was the result of a college assignment many years ago and was originally intended to be a duet for two guitars. However, for this recording I decided to attempt an 'orchestration' of the two guitar parts and expand the composition into something more substantial. Like the title implies, it is is a 16 bar sequence repeated with variations on the harmonisation. There are a lot of influences here including Monteverdi, Thomas Robinson, J.S. Bach, Percy Grainger, and last but not least The Incredible String Band, who made a couple of interesting albums in the late 1960s, notably the "5000 Layers of the Onion". If you have heard any of their stuff, you might recognise where the opening chord sequence came from. The music here is accompanied by a sequence of railway paintings that I made over the years. The portrait is of the famous engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel who built the Great Western Railway in England in the middle of the 19th century. The music was created entirely by programming midi-samples using Cubase 5 music software.
