Spelunky Speedrun: 2:53

Finally taken the record back from ortoslon, though by nowhere near as big a margin as last time.

I get lucky here and get both a Jetpack and a Mattock. The ideal item combination to stumble across for a speedrun is probably Jetpack/Mattock/Compass, but if you only find two useful items, which is much more common, then Jetpack/Mattock is certainly one of the best possible combinations. (Other combinations that I would personally argue are equally good and have come close to getting very good times with are Compass/Mattock and Cape/Teleporter.)

Since I'm already ahead of ortoslon's time when I reach the final boss, I decide not to use the mattock there. In testing I found that it's possible to shave 10 seconds off the final boss fight using a mattock, but it's MUCH more difficult and riskier (due to the random breakage chance of the mattock) than doing it the normal way.

I got this run on my 8685th attempt. I either died or suicided (because I didn't find any items pre-jungle, or because I was behind the old run so there was no point going on) in all of the other 8684.

@daylanb The total number of resets was 8684, or more like 15000 if you include the ones I did for my old 3:02 run. I don't know on how many of those attempts I got a nicely positioned shop early on.

I have yet to beat this game. I can make it to the third world every time, and I can usually make it to the fourth world (where I always die). I made it to the boss ONCE, and died there too. This was very impressive.
