Suplimental information: the VR uses quite a bit of battery. Probably as much as the flash at near full power. Also, the VR "sleep" behavior I demonstrate is true of all VR I've tested. I went to the store and tried 5 different VR lenses and they all went to sleep if you held the lens too still. This only happens when you brace yourself or rest your elbows on something. I doubt you could hold it still enough free-standing. "Normal" mode will attempt to actually lock on and hold that position where as "Active" mode simply dampens movements but does not attempt to out-right stop them.
NOTE: be sure you turn off vr for any long exposure! The lens will "drift" causing any long tripod exposures to appear motion blurry. Kind of ironic.

  • Nice Video! I have a question...

Do you hear the sound of the VR engaging and disengaging she you half press the shutter?

I found that my copy sounds pretty loud in comparison to my 18-105 lens the I can bearly hear.

    Thanks

  • @crcc23 Mostly I can hear (and feel) the click as it engages and disengages. If I listen carefully I can hear the chatter of it adjusting the lens

  • Nice! but whats the big difference between VR I and VR II, btw is that D300 ur holding?

  • @ny1fanta VR 1 doesn't hold as still and is not as effective. I can shoot longer exposures with my 18-200 VR2 at f 5.6 than I can with my 80-200 VR1 at 2.8!!!

  • @bastian74 the vr II is the same vr as the VR I the only diffirence is the lock at 18mm

  • @elvispavarotti I would like to test that out. The VR-II on my 18-200 is far better than the VR-1 on my 70-200. I can frequently get 1/4 second @ 200mm crystal clear on my 18-200 and on the 70-200 I only have luck to about 1/10th of a second.

  • @bastian74 this is because the 70-200mm is really a VR 1 and has more ED element but the so called 'VR I' in 18-200mm VR is already the same VR as in the second version. I had this lens for about a year and it was good for wedding photography and good as an allround lens, but optically it's not that sharp as the 70-200 or 24-70 which are the sharpest from nikon along with 35mm, 50mm and 14-24 mm. It's a good allround lens but optically it's not especially sharp and very soft from 120-140mm. :)

  • thank you so much for those explanations. Really instructive.

  • very well presented - simple yet effective comparisons of the VR's capabilities as compared to other reviews here on youtube ! thanks bastian74 :)

  • I sure appreciate your videos. You are a natural teacher...short, sweet and clear.
