Ethanon engine is completely based on 2D sprites. It uses pixel shaders to do the normalmap based lighting, and it supports any sort of scene construction (isometric, orthogonal, ...) because it's based on arbitrary entities instead of fixed tiles.

The first beta version will be release as soon as I finish the scripting system implementation.

  • totally. now just you should provide the tool to generate the normal maps because if the artist has three times the work as a more classical engine, its a pita that can have the consequence to chose another engine.

but i love it, its so neat it makes me urge to to an RPG with it...

  • Thanks, I'll consider your suggestion. Maybe not to include a normal map generator with the SDK, but to provide the tool that may be downloaded separately and also a tutorial on how to use it.

  • @AndreSan87 OR you could just write a short tutorial on how to use the easy, free and good Normalmap plugin that's been available for years for Gimp which is also free and multi-platform. ;-)

  • @eGax I already made it, its link is on the FAQ :) asantee.net/ethanon/normalmap_tutorial/creating_normalmaps.pdf

  • Wow, this is really amazing!

I want to use this engine for my 2D Action MMORPG "Forgotten Elements"!

I wonder if it would be possible to use your work in combination with a JAVA game, feel free to contact me if you see a chance in this symbiosis!

  • I was looking for a good 2d game engine but couldn't find anything in my price range (zero), so I was watching a tutorial an making games in visual basic when I decided to type in "2d game engine"
