Malakal, the capital of Upper Nile state in southern Sudan, is a crossroads of Sudans North and South. Upper Nile states border with the North is contested. It is currently host to a high political drama involving the Khartoum government-appointed state governor, in addition to enduring inter-ethnic issues that threaten to worsen as the national elections approach.
In Malakal, people from all over Sudan—Darfur, the East, and the North—converge, along with a large population of east African immigrants. This is the story of one bakery, a daily constant in a place where local and national politics make each day—especially in this critical period in Sudans history—anything but certain.
