Aqueduct 03-04-09 5 horses spill

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Jockey Eddie Castro was "body-slam sore," but otherwise not seriously hurt, and four other riders also appeared to escape serious injury after a gruesome five-horse spill Wednesday at Aqueduct.

Castro, 23, was the only one of the five jockeys immediately transported to the hospital after the spill in which his mount, Private Details, broke her left foreleg approaching the quarter pole of the second race. The spill started a chain reaction in which four other horses unseated their riders in a race where only two horses finished.

Jockeys Anna Napravnik (back pain) and Victor Santiago (contusions on head and knee) took off their remaining mounts, while Ramon Dominguez and Joseph Berrios completed the card.

Castro was aboard the filly Private Details, who broke down approaching the quarter pole on Thursday. That started a chain reaction in which four other horses fell, unseating their jockeys. Private Details had to be euthanized but the other four horses were reported to be uninjured.

Jockeys Ramon Dominguez and Joseph Berrios, who were also involved in the spill, rode on Wednesday and Thursday.

While the New York Racing Association declined to show the spill on its nightly recap show Wednesday.

Thank you very much for posting this, as the NYRA is doing its best to pretend this never happened and never aired it on their replay show. This is something people need to see, especially in light of another fatality on the following day, March 5th.

I think NYRA declined to show it out of concern someone just flipping the channels might accidently tune in just as the spill would have come up. Those of us who wanted to see what actually happened pretty much have by now.

this couldve been avoided if the guy on the 5 wasnt urging a horse who was cooked trying to chase 48 speed i think he was cooked wrap up!!!!

Just look at the other sports that are successful 3dog9ty and imagine that , as an example, NASCAR never showed a replay of a crash. Watching a horse race is like watching TV back in the 60's when there were no reruns and the quality of "live" coverage was not very good. All I'm saying is if your industry is dying try something new. Why should not everyone who had money bet on this race be able to see each horse from start to finish and what happens.? Never happens at any track!

Why do we need four angles? It's obvious what happened. Why would we care about reality TV and seventeen different camera angles on National TV?

It's unfortunate that this sport continues to remain unchanged in following the lead horse despite what happens. Reality TV has grown to multi million $ industry because it captures everything from all angles. This is a dying industry because its remained unchanged since FORD developed the assembly line. If this had been A ROD we would have seen what happened from 4 different angles on every major network. Is this negative publicity for the industry? No this is NO publicity except on YTube
