Lecture by William Dalrymple on India's 'First War of Independence' at the Gresham College.

The people of India, Hindus and Muslims united spontaneously in an uprising against the increasing racist and arrogant British East India Co, a front Company for the British Empire in India. The population rallied round the Mughal Emperor, seen as the legitimate leader of the Indian people.

The British (with Sikh and Afghan mercenaries) defeated the Mughal supporters and went on the loot and massacre the population of Delhi -- 100,000 people are estimated to have been killed in Delhi.

This lecture is based on Dalrymple's book 'The Last Mughal', which I recommend, he also wrote 'White Mughals' another good read.

I also recommend 'The Magnificent Mughals' by Zeenat Ziad, published by OUP Pakistan -- A must read for anybody interested in the Mughals.

  • I absolutely ADORED Mr Dalrymple's latest book! I cannot wait to travel to India after having read it!

Thank you greatly kind sir for uploading this enlightening lecture.

  • @RavingCelt009 Many thanks for your comment.

  • "Writer Fernand Braudel wrote in A History of Civilizations (Penguin 1988/1963, p. 232-236), Islamic rule in India as a "colonial experiment" was "extremely violent", and "the Muslims could not rule the country except by systematic terror. Cruelty was the norm – burnings, summary executions, crucifixions or impalements, inventive tortures. Hindu temples were destroyed to make way for mosques. On occasion there were forced conversions"

  • @smoochym Since when did Bradel become an expert on Islam in India? Even most Hindu's dont accept what you have written. This is more what the West did to Africa, North and South Amercia, Asia.

There is no evidence of your claim, India is still 80% Hindu.

Why did Hindu's rally towards a Muslim ruler in 1857?

Read Richard M. Eaton, an expert on India, in particular Islam in India for your claims on Temple destruction.

  • @MughalistanSipahi is Pakistan 80% Hindu as well I wonder?

  • @smoochym

You clearly havent got any idea of the history of the region.

Your just a anti Muslim bigot.

  • @gunner23 And made sure to reduce the richest country on earth to one of the poorest ones. Idiot you must be a dumb stupid Hindu, too bad Mughals didn't eradicate you all but they were too kind unlike the British.

  • Anyway Hindus were never meant to be a power people, throughout history they were ruled by one or another. It was just that Islam was a huge competitor to western imperialism that after fall of Mughal empire, British first stole all possible wealth and made elite Hindus take control so the country remains a third rate power no matter what. Hindus are smart or Indians are smart but now strong power people. They need someone to rule them otherwise they will live in dirt like India is now.

  • So the British freed us from Islamic idiocy thank you britain

  • @smoochym Those were McCauley's words

  • @smoochym "I have traveled across the length and breadth of India and I have not

seen one person who is a beggar, who is a thief. Such wealth I have seen in this country, such high moral values, people of such caliber, that I do not think we would ever conquer this country, unless we break the very backbone of this nation, which is her spiritual and cultural heritage, and, therefore,

  • @smoochym Surprisingly there are books/research by ASI (Archaeological survey of India) that says Mughals paid good amounts to restore old temples. New temples were not built but no temples were destroyed. After British control, countless "historians" were thrown in to write fabricated stories of temple destruction under Muslims so there is always a continued resentment amount people.

  • @smoochym Read your history, where ever the union flag flew, there were horrible civil wars. Promoting one monitory over another majority was their trick to divide and rule. How many atrocities were committed by British in 1857 rebellion, children was burnt. Did you forget Jaliawala Bagh? India only gained enormous wealth during Mughal rule due to peace and prosperity. Hindus occupied special high ranks in Mughal courts.Funny even Akbar's wife was a rajput princess.

  • @smoochym If that is true, how come there are so many Hindus in India today. Look at the countries Westerners took over, the natives were wiped out - Americas, Australia or South Africa. During Mughal rule, India was at it's highest with 25% of world economy. Aurangzeb's treasury was twice of Europe. India was super rich. After British took control, GDP input was 3.8%. British fabricated lies to make Muslims/Hindus always fight - divide and rule.
