Sixty-nine year old Wilhelm Backhaus (1884-1969) is soloist in this performance, recorded in June, 1953 at the Großer Musikvereinssaal, Vienna, of the Brahms Piano Concerto in D minor, Op. 15. Karl Böhm conducts the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. I created this video from the LP depicted in the video above, issued on the London label, serial number LL 911. All images in this video were taken from the LP label (4:44, 31:50) and the LP jacket (19:13), with the exception of those of Brahms and the May, 1954, Billboard magazine advertisement for the LP (33:37). Piano score fragments (3:31, 18:40, 31:37, 41:11) are from the public domain. This video concludes with an image of Brahms grave at Zentralfriedhof in Vienna; he is laid to rest next to Johan Strauss, Jr., a composer of whom Brahms was a great admirer.

1. Maestoso
2. Adagio (19:10)
3. Rondo (Allegro non troppo) (31:36)

(Note: I had uploaded the third movement of this work last year, but am now able to share the complete recording thanks to YouTube's extension of timie limitations on uploads.)
