Kevin Purton of Surrey Environmental Partners leads a tour of Surrey Bend, the last big wilderness area in Surrey, currently under threat of work which could start soon for the Gateway project's South Fraser Perimeter Road.
Surrey Bend has been described by the Wilderness Committee as "a thousand natural, undiked, undeveloped acres containing the greatest mix of wetland habitats left in the lower Fraser Valley."
Bears, deer and other mammals are known to swim across the river to this place, and it provides a unique freshwater marsh habitat found nowhere else in the region. The main creek which runs through its centre is home to every species of west coast salmon, along with many other species of fish. Major habitat restoration projects on adjoining lands could be ruined by the South Fraser Truck Freeway as well.
