NEWPORT, Ky. (WKRC) - A number of people were forced out of their home Saturday in Newport due to a fire.Crews were called to a home on York Street near 9th Street shortly before 10 a.m. This is a multi-family unit. A couple of people home at the time smelled smoke and called 9-1-1.Everyone was evacuated. It turned out that the fire was in the downstairs rear area of the home. 2 cats and 2 ferrets were rescued. One animal is still missing at this time. The residents on the first floor were not able to return to their homes due to damage. It was not immediately clear if the residents in other parts of the building would be able to return.An investigation into the cause of the fire continues.
