Paul Vallas, the "turnaround" superintendent previously credited with fixing the broken school systems in Chicago and Philadelphia has taken the reins of the much smaller, but deeply troubled Recovery School District. With dismal test scores, immense poverty, and crumbling facilities even before Hurricane Katrina wreaked further damage on the system, there is skepticism in this city that has seen a wave of reformers come and quickly leave. Paul Vallas, however, is approaching his new charge with tremendous optimism.

Paul Vallas did an awful job in Philly and allowed charter operators to create empires off of the backs of Pennsylvania taxpayers

The future performance of NOLA public schools will be a referendum on the educational reform notions made popular by Teach for America and KIPP. I hope these new reformers don't forget to honor the good veteran teachers who put in years of work. NOLA is not the 3rd world, so Paul's "Peace Corps Mentality" is scary. I hope they can strike a balance between the new leaderships optimism and the veterans wisdom.
