  • "tropospheric opening" - unusual atmospheric condition which enables reception of TV and FM stations beyond their intended service areas. Technical difficulty at the time was unknown to me, but rather prolonged ~ 4 hours on test card.

  • Correct. Because of technical difficulties, ABTN1 Taree displayed this card between 2100-2300 local time. The timing of this reception was fortuitous because of the record high strength Taree tropospheric opening. This was a one-off colour reception of ABTN1.

  • Nice pickup! Did you manage to get the rest of that national anthem sequence or was that all that you could pick up on the DX?

  • Thanks for the feedback. That is all I recorded of the national anthem from ABTN1. This DX reception didn't fade, instead, I hit the pause button on the VCR because at the time I didn't feel that recording the anthem was especially important. Now I know different! I have a complete sign-off of ABN2 (Dec 1979), and ABTN6 Taree sign-on & off 1992. Will upload these videos later.

  • if i may ask, dont get me wrong i glade you did, but what made you record the test patterns? if you thought the anthem wasn't important.

Dont get the wrong idea, im thankful and interested in all these recordings :)

  • PM5544 test cards with local IDs are rarely seen. This was a unique opportunity considering atmospheric conditions were also enhanced at the same time. As far as we know, no one else recorded ABTN1 with local ID.

  • @IanGorton I recall in 1987 some Victorian regional ABC affiliates refused to take "rage" when it first started and instead had their local callsign test pattern with the message "DUE TO INDUSTRIAL DISPUTE RAGE WILL NOT BE SHOWN TONIGHT" superimposed over it. No other ABC programmes were affected.

  • Also remember in the 80s where they went on strike and basically had a notice on the screen with the tone

  • Great recording, typical full dynamic range test card music. I regard this as an unmissed opportunity to capture something unusual and different for posterity when the dx conditions were just right. Very rare, unique in fact, and very interesting. Personally, I love the anthem at the end too.

  • Two questions: One, what is "Taree tropospheric opening"?

and two: What was the technical difficulty?

  • Did you know that "A" is actually the third letter in the callsign of ABTN1?

  • At least I'm learning something about Australian television I didn't know before.

  • Sad really at times when stuff like this was important 20 years down the line.
