My Aikido dojo was invited to Tokyo to participate in the Aikido demonstrations at the Budokan on Saturday. I got to see some impressive techniques performed by some high ranking Aikido masters, including Moriteru Ueshiba, the current dōshu of the Aikikai (he takes on 4 attackers at the end of the video). Very cool stuff.

  • nice video!

  • @hadronica2 Thanks! I miss my old dojo in Aizu.

  • Hey I've been doing Aikido for a little over a year now and have made it to 5th Kyu. Got any tips for better solo practice. It gets kind of annoying not being able to practice much of the form with out an Uke.

  • Yeah, I've been unable to practice by myself since leaving my dojo, so I'm not sure what advice I can give you. Sorry.

  • Im sure you take the sport very seriously and you have great respect in practicing the art but, you should show just as much respect in it when you are out with your friends. Its not just a sport to some people but a way of life and it should be treated with more respect then what you are showing it.

  • Fair enough.

  • @AlchemicalSage What I do when I want to (have to) practice alone is to do the techniques alone and try to work on the footwork and check how I'm standing after the technique is performed. It's actually a pretty good way of practicing the techniques you have learned. To learn new techniques you will of course do it best in the dojo with your teacher. I will be third kyu soon and I still see myself as a newbie. :P

    Practice safe and most of all, enjoy it. :)

  • To Mikhal95 and mrformby;

    You guys need to grow a funny bone, these students are just enjoying their lives off the mat. I'm sure they took being on the mat seriously. And uh.. where is the mock Asian accent? haha, is that the part where they speak Japanese? How dare those foreigners mock "asian(s)" by speaking Japanese! Awful...

    You know how I know these students take Aikido seriously? Because; Kevin was there.

  • @AlchemicalSage Tai sabaki and sometimes combined with weapons will keep you a little from getting "rusty" until youg get another chance to train ... Besides using gentle katame waza to sensualize XD

  • Rather than be at a important demo, these students act like they are going to the Comedy Club.
