Both great songs.
But what's really important here is where both of those guys drew their inspiration from: The great jazz guitarist, Wes Montgomery..
He was the guy that really popularized the 'octave style' of playing melodies that Vai and Johnson use in these tunes.
If you play guitar you may know what that is, so sorry for the explanation...but it's when a guitarist plays two notes at the same time for the melody instead of one. A low version and a high version.
Ex. a low A and a higher A.

Yep. Wes was the MASTER of that style of playing....he pretty much invented it. Apparently his neighbors would complain that his guitar was too loud when he practiced at night, so he started using his thumb to get a softer more muted sound.
I can't imagine complaining about the guitar playing of Wes Montgomery coming from the room next door!
