The student newspaper at UMD - Diamondback, published a wrong map of India on their front page (http://print.umdbk.com/2011-11-23/0) on Nov 23 2011. The image of the map in DB grossly misrepresented India's boundaries. Jammu & Kashmir as well as 8 eastern states of India had been omitted. The Indian community on campus reacted to it by starting a signature campaign online, after which the newspaper published a clarification on Nov 28 (http://print.umdbk.com/2011-11-28/1).

Diamondback in it's clarification said that the map of India "did not include some disputed territory" and that it was "not intended as a political message". However, not all of the territory omitted in the graphic is "disputed". Moreover they have failed to provide the reference for the map used.

  • The case here is different, Uzair. What we are appealing for is objective journalism. The map published by DB does not match any source! Imagine Pak-map without Baluchistna & Sindh on DB front page, bigger than the news itself. Hope you see through the argument. Happy and open for discussion. Would encourage you to sign our petition.

    Cheers!

    These are the map sources:

  • Just ask Google images by typing "Map of India", and you can probably go through around >10,000 consecutive images to find out that Diamondback is wrong. As simple as that.

  • The map published by DB is no way closer to UN/US/India/China official sources.

  • @UzairSAhmed Which source of map is the most authentic according to you? Please provide link. I have seen the UN/US/India/China official sources and they are no way closer to the map published by DB.

  • it may be a law in my country against alcohol but that does mean i sign petitions against drunk guys. it may be a law in india to include kashmir in its map , but its not here. so stop being melodramatic and be open minded

  • utterly ridiculous with an utterly ridiculous analogy. the thing with your "analogy" of how would we feel if the map of america had TX,CA and other states left out. an information for your narrow outlook, none of these states have been declared as "disputed territory" by the U.N like kashmir is. so your analogy falls flat on its face since UN has declared it as a disputed territory

  • It's a BIG mistake. Diamondback should apologize and move forward!
