I saw a ex-sou SD40-2HH two years back on a local In Radford, VA. It too had the NS paint wearing off revealing the original Southern decal underneath

@redsoxfan423 Funny thing about that. yesterday i was tainwatching where i live in upstate NY and ui caught NS HH SD40-2 #6012 and a HH GP38-2 on a local freight. the GP38-2 had Norfolk and Western written on it.

ha i was going to ask the same ... hmmm ns #5034 is in NC but it's brother # 5049 does the conniaut yard jobs in conniaut ohio. sometimes it will have a caboose to mentor lumber in mentor ohio and head to fairport ohio for some other cars too...

Love those high hoods.They used come by my house when I lived in Roxboro.The Norfolk and Western would roll through on the old L and D line heaed to Durham,NC. Man I miss those days.

@redsoxfan423 Maybe you can clarify something for me, I know NS got the HH units from The Southern, but why did the order them with HH's? I suppose you could put a steam generator there but they were used for freight.

@AlcoFan2010 N&W also had highhoods, although their most recent SD40-2s came with the low nose. Look for the SD40-2s in the 6000s that have not been redone by NS. As to why Southern bought the units with a high nose, I'm not sure. I read around on the internet, and the only thing I saw was to get through a union loophole about the front of the engine or something.
