Johnstown, PA has been known for its frequent flooding and was often referred to notoriously as "The Flood City". It is the home of several historic floods and subsequent laws, taxes, music, art and literature related to its flooding. A historic flood in the late nineteenth-century resulted in the single largest number of civilian loss at the time and the first major disaster relief effort handled by the American Red Cross. Another devastating flood led to establishment of the Flood Control Act by Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Dr. Chadderton will discuss these historic floods in the Johnstown area and investigate and reconstruct the floods caused by dam failure.
Ronald Chadderton holds the Edward A. Daylor Chair in Environmental Engineering. He is also a Professor and Chair in the department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Villanova University.
