When you use IF, you MUST use WERE! I admit it's a common even with college professors.

@bmxymierda No, it isn't. You need to use the subjunctive tense. You don't use was with this tense. Look it up.

Isn't it BETTER to say WERE but still gramatically correct to use WAS?

A more proper use of the subjunctive would certainly be: "If he were rich..."
