"Unlike our USB microscopes, this 'scope is WiFi based. This means that instead of having a cable or wireless-usb-dongle type connection, there's a WiFi access point inside the camera enclosure. When you turn it on, it will create a new hotspot just for the camera, so that any tablet or smartphone (such as an iPad/iPhone/Android/etc) can connect to the camera and view the microscope's video output. 640x480 is not good quality. That's 0.3MP. How come these crappy old sensors are still being sold? I'd consider buying one of these if the resolution was better. Surely putting an 8MP sensor in this wouldn't add very much to the price.

The blurb says it will do 200x. Is this optical 200x zoom, or is it digitally achieved?

It's poor quality because someone is recording the Ustream video live. Ideally they would have their video mixing software dump to disk so they don't have to record the live stream and end up with multiple compression passes.

So how does the WiFi microscope connect? does it have to connect to a local network or can it just work completely on its own?

I love the Pi printer. It one of those projects that might be great for a Pi Model A ;)
