If I didn't have deaf parents my sisters and myself probably would have never learned to sign. But now both my sisters work as interpreters for deaf elementary students and im currently teaching my 18 month old daughter to sign too.

@ Rhondacat: same here.. I would love to be able to takeclasses, but itwasnever available, when I was going to college, theasl class always conflicted with my regular class schedule..... @video: I can't believe they actually let people teach others having no skill in actual asl? As I've sort of understood it, that can be quite dangerous.. Sending peopleout to communicate, and they'll quickly find outhat they were just wasting time in the class... That sucks!

Michele, this was not a college class was it? I picture a community class when you talk about it. I think that explains how a person with no skill could get a position teaching an "ASL class". :-)
that doesn't mean it's ok, i hope this wasn't put on by an organization associated with the deaf community, that would be shameful.

yeah -scoffs-if they want to teach them sign asl they should intreview that person or whatever before hired lol! haha but luckily it wasnt real wasnt it?

i'm estonished that i understood what you were saying. i've been using Learn ASL books for about a month now, and i've gotten pretty good at understanding. my signing is slow, but i'm working on it. Thank you for the excellent story. and yes, that teacher impression was funny.

your impression of the 'teacher' was hilarious! im hearing but have been learning asl for about 5 years so i know what you mean about trying to communicate with people who think they know what they're doing but really dont. im really glad i can communicate with Deaf people tho, they are so expressive!

Everybody in the ASL department at my college is deaf. In 101 we had an interpreter, but after that, we were on our own. Wouldn't have hurt to tried and learned it at a younger age, but it was not available until college. That makes me angry.

OH MY GOD. I am actually really angry about this. How on *earth* do people with NO qualifications to teach ASL, and no skill, ever get hired??? How about they hire someone Deaf, DUH?!
