In terms of story, the build up was there for Williams to be the one to have the showdown with Bolo, not Roper. The criticism on Bolos sloppiness, which in the end led to the kick in the balls. In fact if you look at the film again the dialog between Han and Williams seem more tailored for Roper "Your style is unorthodox" and "the winning" seem to fit better with Ropers taking the dives in the first fight to build up his winnings. or maybe I'm just reaching.

@dragonstateofmind the original script had Roper taking a dirt nap instead of Kelly but John Saxon wanted to be the one who lives or he was walking away so the producers re wrote it to where Jim got his Fro splited.
But It would be so cool if Jim whoop up on Bolo with so much soul!!
