Here is Sensei Isaka executing the opening sequence of Kanku Dai in his unique way. For more information please visit www.theshotokanway.com the Online Shotokan Karate Magazine and Research Centre.
Not the shitai (official version dictated by JKA) of this kata, but doing this is highly recommended. Continuous engagement of the back muscles (his arched back) and maximum activation of the hips (low and slow stance transitions). Consider this excellent supplementary training and you'll see an improvement in your form and movement in the shitai.
right so breath heavier move slower to use more muscle groups? was that the point? i would rather stick with the traditional way.. this isnt kungfu its shotokan lets keep it that way
For those who don't get what he's doing here, look at i from a strictly muscular point of view. Look at how he's engaging every muscle possible in every movement. At that stage of karate, you already know this kata like the back of your hand, and doing it this kata the usual way would not present the same challenges as it did when you first learned it, because your body has adapted. A wise karateka would find ways to make it more challenging. This is Isaka's way, everyone must find thier own.
@DrSanchez666 I think your a waste of time with your stupid comments. I think your not very well placed to talk about if kata's are good or not if you haven't been doing them since alot of time. No offence in this message.
This is a true compliment to shotokan in that it shows other martial practitioners the various forms hidden within this versital art ! It is very rare that you see masters of this artform performing practical kata from the position of total internalization. This reveals the tai chi, kungfu and qi kong aspect of our training in shotokan! Thank you so very much for posting this Sensei! Godbless you!
check out keishinkan downloads-shows isaaka doing kata traditional in 80's at old jka hombu, then check out long stretch kihon in demo in paris in mid 90's, then to formnow. shows an evolution, he is now very much in control of his movements. he can do any traditional movement, he is developing strength through core muscles which are usually not trained properly
its an extension on his explanation to use the back muscles and shoulder rotation and core muscles rather than be all stiff , just a training aid ,asai sensei complained that many shotokan practitioners were stiff-he experimented all the time like isaaka and took his karate to a new level by thinking out of the square, nakayama accepted karate as an evolving entity
