@theshow2k8 Nationalism was made up by monarchs. Even the oldest nations aren't that old compared to human history. Categories got bigger and stakes higher as population grew in "civilized" areas and there was uneven growth in demand and technology: competition. Elites using ideology to impose social control established a paradigm of constant war between factions that over time became "nations". Someone gets greedy for wealth, status, power and the killing starts. People fight but nations war.

@ninjajesus81 Oh yeah. That's one I hear a lot, too (who doesn't?) and I point it out on occasion to the person who says it. On occasion being most times, actually. I don't bother when it is someone who I think might not understand.
