I am a 20 year old woman, and I adore the style and class of this period, but I don't think anyone should glorify the "good old days". Every time has its ups and downs, and even with all our problems today, I still would'nt have wanted to be a woman in society back then.

girls today haven't a clue what a sewing needle is, let alone how to make their clothes or mend them

Why don't girls wear those cool looking black & white saddle shoes anymore? The most obsolete idea here is that the girls actually FIX their clothes. Nowadays, anything breaks or rips or tears, you just throw it away and buy something new. The idea that somebody should actually know how to DO anything, like fix or sew or mend anything, is pretty old fashioned. Nowadays, just get out the credit card and buy something new.

@conseildetat Both my grandmothers (one born 1905, one born 1915) were intelligent women who were politically aware and active in civic affairs. Your opinion of 1940's women is terribly inaccurate.

My english is not good, but is pretty obvious that the accent and the way to talk was very different at that era..

@Idoljunky32 Although I do agree, yes they didn't have to worry about being stick thin the skinny ones did have to worry about gaining weight. It was basically todays society swapped around.

@conseildetat Sorry to disagree. Please do not generalize. There were plently of educated women back then. My mother is one of them. She had a degree and was well versed in Russian literature. She loves classical music. She chose to work outside. She managed to look tidy and stay in shape (did not overeat and walked everywhere). She married a very gentle man (my father) who adored her and he didn't mind ironing his own shirts or changing nappies.
Woman back then were so elegant and beautiful. And they never had to worry about being stick thin, they had more morals and respected themselves more. My mother use to tell me "It's always good to be updated with the fashions of today, but always be ladylike about it!" "Ladylike" was a favorite word of hers.
