Lovely machine.

Nice ride. Two questions: What does the bike weight? Do you think this bike will be good for a beginner like me? I'm thinking of buying the -10 model in a couple of weeks.

i got the 07 jake with road tires on it. i go on an average 5km/h faster.

All drop bar bikes take a little getting used to imo when you've come straight off a flat bar. I would heartily rcomend this bike to others as I love mine.
However points to bear in mind are the tyres need a strip of antipuncture kevlar lining or find some decent tyres, haha. Mud guards would need to be fitted, not sure whats suitable for this bike tbh. I tried a few cheap ones but none fitted so you may have to spend more.

is $600 a good deal for an 09 model?

I'm a Brit, so I'm not entirely sure tbh :-)
Thats what? £400? It would have to be near mint imo. Check the front and rear hubs to see that they still turn ok (lift the wheel and spin, if it slows too fast or stops suddenly then the bearings have gone - happened eventually on mine)
Also check the pedals, Mine have worn out after a year of constant use. Cheap bearings again, though these things can be upgraded it will affect how much you'll wish to pay.
Also check for chain stay marks

I consider my Jake the go-anywhere, do-anything freedom machine. Have ridden in mud and gravel and last weekend rode in a 90 km charity ride in a little over 4 hours.

Excellant stuff!
Since I made this I changed the wheels (and made another video as a result) and its a little faster and smoother as a result.

..continued (ran out of space)
If its serious offroading then a proper MTB would be better for some. BTW have a look at some of the cyclocross vids on youtube and that will let you know what the bike is designed for.
Lots of other 'cross bikes out there too. Best to go to a good shop and try out a couple :-D
