This is an exercise for widening abilities and skills in medieval wrestling, and to expand practitioners' horizons for real-world self-defense.

By limiting the use of the body--in this case by removing the ability to use one limb--students are forced to get creative and examine familiar situations under unfamiliar terms. Any limb would do but for this night's class it was the dominant arm, just as the attacks happen to have been made with a dagger.

I should mention that the attack was not pre-arranged, and if at all possible in training, it shouldn't be. The point is to apply what one already knows in new situations, and the incoming attack needs to be an unknown for this to be effective. The linear study of martial technique only takes one so far. Non-linear training drills break these habits and help develop fluid, reactive ability in practitioners.

  • you all are pros @ defending knife attacks

  • @jettarulz, LOL. : ) I have my students do a lot of knife work. Not only is it the most common modern weapon that you might have to face in a fight, but it's so closely-related to your body, that it helps with overall body unity, which then effects everything you do.

  • what is the music ?

  • This is Mozart's Die Entfuhrung Aus Dem Serail (The Abduction from the Seraglio).

  • This is fantastic. The basic idea is great on its own, but the notes that expand on it are even better. Thank you for uploading these videos.

  • You're welcome! I'm glad you find it useful.

  • Hey guys,

I am here in Japan and I have just begun studying WMA and have been studying Aikido for about a year now.

All I can say is wow...though I love practicing aikido and will continue studying, aikido has nothing on you guys.

    You guys are awsome!!!

  • Thanks for the feedback. We work regularly with multifaceted and "chaotic" training programs at my school. I think it's necessary for breathing life into the techniques.

  • This was fantastic. I agree with what you said at the beginning. "It's not about new techniques. It's about practicing what you already know..." Great job!
